2nd Commodores Message

Dear Members,

After seven weeks the impact of the Coronavirus Pandemic continues to be felt across the UK, affecting all of our lives and I hope that you, your family and friends remain safe and well.

I am delighted to see that our club community spirit has stayed strong. Members have offered their talents and support and we have enjoyed a varied programme of activities:

  • Competitive racing through Sunday and Wednesday virtual regattas. This has been very popular with over 40 sailors competing.
  • A talent show/competition highlighting some of the amazing hidden talents our members have.
  • Various talks hosted by members: meteorology, how to have a winning mindset, The Marlow Rope show. Attendance has been in excess of 40 members at each event.
  • And last night an opportunity to learn how to splice attended by 25 members and by popular demand there will be a follow up to this next month.

We have all had to embrace new technology and all its challenges but we have shown that we can overcome these obstacles and enjoy coming together as a club. Your messages of support have been warmly received. Don't worry if you have missed anything as you can revisit at your leisure on our new Virtual Clubhouse website and also check for details of all that is coming up.

We know that many of you have had concerns about your boats and your inability to undertake checks or carry out maintenance. Please rest assured that we are keeping an eye on the boat park and we will be sharing updates via social media.

Thank you for renewing your club membership, we are extremely grateful for your support and loyalty. As I wrote in my previous message, your subscriptions keep the club going and will enable us to resume operations as soon as current restrictions are lifted.

Membership is our lifeblood as many of us have taken up regular exercise during this crisis, it may be a good opportunity to encourage family and friends to consider taking up sailing as a great form of outdoor exercise when we restart.

We are increasingly looking forward to a safe and appropriate return to the water and we have been working with the RYA and others to ensure that we will be ready. I believe that there is a very strong case for sailing to be one of the first activities that could be resumed safely within necessary guidelines for social distancing. We look forward to more information on Sunday from the Prime Minister.

Keep safe and well.
